A Fargo police officer is accused of telling someone on Facebook to "do us all a favor and hang urself," and now he's being investigated.

Interim Police Chief Dave Todd told KFGO a citizen filed a complaint with the Fargo Police Department about a comment Officer Zach Messmer apparently made on Facebook.

It all started when Facebook user Darryl Danielson commented on a story WDAY posted on its Facebook page Monday night, about a man who was shot by police in Grand Forks over the weekend. Danielson was demanding police release more information about the shooting. (Read more about the shooting in the Grand Forks Herald.)

Debate erupted with Danielson's comment, which received more than 46 replies, including one from Zach Messmer – which has since been deleted.

Messmer apparently wrote, "Darryl ….u should do us all a favor and hang urself?" WDAY reports.

The debate quickly turned to Messmer's comment, who people identified as an officer with the Fargo police department, and called him out or expressed their support for Danielson.

Danielson posted a screenshot of the comment notification to WDAY and ValleyNewsLive's Facebook pages.

He also filed a complaint with the Fargo Police Department.

At least one person has shown their support for Messmer, saying in a post on the Fargo Police Department's Facebook page that he was provoked.

Todd told the KFGO the comment made was "inappropriate" and ordered an internal investigation, which will determine if the complaint can be confirmed. If it can, the department will determine a punishment.

A spokesperson for the police department declined to comment on if there were any rules that limit an officer's freedom of speech online, WDAY reports.

The City of Fargo does have a social media customer use policy on its website, which states, "we welcome comments that are respectful of the audience, add value to the discussion and do not contain personal attacks or offensive comments."
