Facebook is more popular than ever, new study says

Thank you Mark Zuckerberg.

Americans are deeply connected to social media, and a new study says Facebook is our favorite platform.

According to the Pew Research Center, Facebook continues to be the most popular social networking platform in America - by a lot.

They surveyed 1,520 adults from March 7 to April 4, and found that about 79 percent of Americans who use the internet are on Facebook. That's more than double the number of people that use Twitter (24 percent), Pinterest (31 percent), Instagram (32 percent), or LinkedIn (29 percent).

If we account for the people who don't use the internet at all, that would mean that 68 percent of all adults in the U.S. are Facebook users, the study says.

We're also checking in more often

Not only are more people are Facebook, the number of daily users has increased over the last year.

Pew says 76 percent of Americans are on the site every day, up from 70 percent in 2015. Within that percentage, 55 percent said they visit Facebook multiple times a day, and 22 percent said they check in about once a day.

Maybe that's because a majority of Americans say they get their news from social media. Plus a ton of people turned to Facebook and other sites to follow the 2016 presidential election.

Facebook's not just for young people anymore

Although young adults continue to use Facebook at high raters, older adult users are on the rise.

Pew says the number of online adults who report using Facebook has increased by 7 percentage points from last year's survey. And about 62 percent of online adults ages 65 and older now use Facebook, up from 48 percent in 2015.

And women use the site at higher rates than men - 83 percent of female internet users have Facebook, compared to 75 percent of male internet users.
