Family hopes to hold race in memory of teen who died at the track

Kyler Lenz was just 14 years old, and would have been a high school sophomore.

The parents of a 14-year-old who died during an ATV race are hoping to raise enough money to hold a race in his memory.

Kyler Lenz was competing at the Spring Creek Motocross park in Millville on July 1 – during the first lap he was thrown from his ATV, a GoFundMe explains.

He died immediately from head trauma.

Lenz was heading into his sophomore year at Deforest High School in Wisconsin, his obituary says. He loved being on ATVs, and in his short time became an "accomplished rider," including as a member of Team Heartland Racing.

"Your family is a huge ambassador for the sport and the passion Kyler carried for it was seen by all that knew him!" wrote Sugar Maple Motocross on Facenook. "He will be missed. God speed buddy!"

Lenz's obituary describes him as a teen who "was always willing to help give pointers and help teach other riders. He will always be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, which no matter the circumstance, always wanted to race."

Lenz's parents, Kevin and Nicole, would like that influence to continue.

Raising money for a sponsored race

The Kyler Lenz Memorial Fund, started by his parents, is aiming to raise $50,000.

"While no amount of money can ever replace our only child Kyler, we want him to be remembered in the racing community through a sponsored race in the future," they wrote on the page. "Kyler would expect us to help other kids pursue their dreams just as he had the opportunity to do."

The funds raised would go toward that goal, and also help with the cost of the funeral. They've raised more than $14,000 in two days.

"We have already experienced an extreme outpouring of support from the racing community and Kyler's friends. We had no idea the number of lives that he touched in so many different ways and we are so fortunate to call him our son," the GoFundMe says.
