The family of Keith Lamont Scott – the 43-year-old black man shot and killed by an officer in North Carolina on Tuesday – has released video footage of the incident.

The cell phone video appears to have been taken by Scott's wife, Rakeyia Scott. It shows the 50 seconds leading up to the shooting, but does not clearly show Keith Scott nor the officers.

Throughout the video, Rakeyia can be heard pleading with police, saying "don't shoot him."

Police aren't clearly captured in the video, but they can be heard repeatedly saying "drop the gun."

Rakeyia responds, "He doesn't have a gun. He has a T.B.I. (traumatic brain injury). He's not going to do anything to you guys. He just took his medicine."

Moments later, gunshots can be heard and Rakeyia moves the camera closer saying, "he better not be dead."

The the video then shows a man – apparently Keith Scott – on the ground surrounded by officers.

The video contains profanity and footage that may be disturbing to some. You can watch it here.

Violent protests in North Carolina

Since Tuesday's fatal shooting, hundreds of people have protested in Charlotte over the past three days.

According to CNN, the first two nights were pretty violent. Businesses were vandalized and one protester was fatally shot.

NBC says protesters have been rallying against police who say Keith Scott had a handgun.

However, family members maintain the 43-year-old was unarmed and posed no threat.

CNN says on Thursday police showed family members their footage of the incident – which has not been released to the public.

Family members told NBC that Scott was slowly walking backwards when the shooting happened.

And the city's mayor told CNN's Anderson Cooper that the videos were not very clear and that "the gun in question is a small gun, and it was not easy to see."

The New York Times says Keith was in a motorcycle accident last November and suffered a brain injury.
