Fargo-Moorhead flood protection project gets approval in U.S. house

A project that will construct a diversion project along the Red River in the Fargo-Moorhead area was approved on Wednesday in the U.S. House.

The House authorized an $8.2 billion dollar bulk package of water infrastructure projects, called the Water Resources Reform and Development Act.

The Fargo Forum reports the bill authorized the $1.8 billion flood protection project. That bill passed on a vote of 417-3, amongst the "no" votes was U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson. Peterson's district includes the city of Moorhead.

Peterson said he was opposed to the bill because of changes that negatively impact another flood control project in his district, in the city of Roseau.

The fight for federal money now begins, and congressional representatives think that will be a much tougher fight. The project is seeking about $810 million in federal funds.

The remaining costs of the projects, not covered by the federal government would be paid for by North Dakota and Minnesota.

The Senate passed the bill in May, so now a conference committee will need to work out the differences between the bills before it can be re-passed and signed into law.

The project would construct a 35-mile long diversion of the Red River around the Fargo-Moorhead area to protect the city against a 100-year flood.
