Fargo-Moorhead leaders plead for federal aid for permanent flood protection

City and county officials in the Fargo-Moorhead area pleaded for permanent flood protection Thursday, according to KSTP. Congress will consider whether to help fund a nearly $2 billion diversion channel around the area as the region prepares for the fourth major flood in five years.

Meanwhile, the city of Fargo is asking for volunteers to help make 500,000 sandbags."Sandbag Central" is expected to open on April 3, when the city and county anticipate placing more than a million sandbags against the rising water.

Chances of a top-five flood increased as cold temperatures delay the melting of an above-average snowpack, according to the National Weather Service. The chances of spring rainfall increase around the time the snow would melt.

The NWS created a slideshow ominously titled, "Get ready for a big one."

Fargo spent $100 million on flood protection since the 2009 flood, buying out homes in low-lying areas and building about 20 levees. Moorhead invested more than $88 million on similar projects.
