A man from Fargo has died after his powered glider crashed shortly after taking off from an airport in Arizona.

Police in Buckeye, Az, say the glider was found 200 feet off the runway at Buckeye Municipal Airport at 1:52 p.m. on Tuesday.

The pilot, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has been identified as James George III, 55, of West Fargo.

He was piloting a Revo Weight Shaft Trick, a powered hang glider registered to a resident of Buckeye.

Local police say George was an experienced pilot who had flown aircrafts of this type before.

He was taking off from the airport when the crash occurred.

It's not known at this stage what caused him to crash, with the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board being called in to assist with the investigation.

The Fargo Forum reports that George was in a serious incident in 2005 when the plane he was piloting crash-landed in a front yard of a north Fargo home, with George and a passenger seriously injured.

George was praised for his piloting skills in that incident, preventing other people from being harmed, and a friend of his told the newspaper he'd become a more cautious flier in the years since that crash.
