'Fargo' TV series to premiere in April

The TV series based on Joel and Ethan Coen's classic movie "Fargo" finally has a premiere date.

The Hollywood Reporter says the new FX limited series will begin April 15 and run 10 episodes.

Noah Hawley, who is producing the show with four others including the Coen brothers, told reporters at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour this week that he approached the series as a 10-episode movie, and it will stand on its own for anyone who has not seen the 1996 film.

"I don't think you need to it watch before (watching the series), but I think you should watch it because it's a great movie, but you don't need to," said Hawley, who wrote the episodes.

The series stars Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman ("The Hobbit") in what FX says is a whole new “true crime” story with a new case and characters that also includes the humor, homicide and “Minnesota nice” of the original.

Pop Sugar has comparisons of the movie characters to the characters in the TV series.

Thornton stars as Lorne Malvo, who THR described as "a decidedly more serious heavy than the one portrayed by Steve Buscemi" in the movie. Freeman plays Lester Nygaard, a take on the sad-sack car salesman played by William H. Macy in the film, while Allison Tolman plays a role that mirrors Frances McDormand's intuitive police officer.

According to THR, Thornton said that he easily committed to the series after reading the pilot script. The acclaimed film actor told reporters that he moved on to television because it provides he and his acting peers the sort of quality material they're accustomed to.

"If you want to be a celebrity, then just go to the dentist in Beverly Hills and punch somebody. If you want to be an actor, get on a really good series on TV because that's where it's at," Thornton said.

The TV version of "Fargo" also stars Colin Hanks, Kate Walsh, Bob Odenkirk and Glen Howerton.
