Fargo's new bike-sharing service is already looking like a hit

Two weeks after its launch, Fargo's new bike-sharing service looks like a hit – and some folks think it's a sign the city needs to expand its bike routes.

On Monday night, the operations director of Great Rides Fargo showed city commissioners ridership numbers as proof it might be time for some bike-only lanes, the Forum reports.

Sara Watson Curry reported there have been 4,300 trips so far, and that the bike-sharing service "broke a one-day record" Monday with the rental of nearly 1,000 bicycles.

According to KFGO, Fargo did approve bike lanes on NP Avenue in the downtown area earlier this month – about two blocks' worth. Cycling advocates hope it doesn't end there.

The push for more lanes has the backing of North Dakota State University President Dean Bresciani. The Forum notes 94 percent of Great Ride's nearly 2,800 users have been students.

KVRR reports that the service launched with 101 bikes at eleven docking stations around downtown and the NDSU campus.

Meanwhile, a similar program in the Twin Cities, the popular Nice Ride MN, comes back Wednesday, April 1.
