Both of Minnesota's Senators backed the new farm bill and praised it for cutting costs while still providing farmers a safety net. The Senate approval puts more pressure on the House to pass something before the current farm bill expires at the end of September.

Reuters reports the Chicago Mercantile Exchange has set up a $100 million fund to help farmers and ranchers who lost money after the collapse of commodities trading firm MF Global. Many farmers and agricultural businesses in Minnesota saw their accounts frozen after the firm suddenly went belly-up.

A joint program, established in 1991, between the United States and Canada is on track to reduce nine toxic chemicals like mercury and PCBs by 2020. According to Minnesota Public Radio, a draft report says sources of pollution around Lake Superior have cut mercury emissions by 80 percent and dioxins by 85 percent.

The Pioneer Press reports the median net farm income was up one percent to hit a record $123,000 last year. Crop farmers were "still very profitable," but saw a slight decrease despite record-high crop prices. The dairy sector as well as hog and beef producers all saw improvements, according to the annual report released Wednesday.

A new survey by a national research firm finds more than 80 percent of people have a positive view on agriculture in Minnesota. The majority of the 500 residents surveyed also agreed farming was an important part of the state's economy.
