A Farmington Marine whose officer father died last year recently met President Barack Obama at a tribute to fallen military officers in Washington, D.C., the Farmington Independent reports.

Ashton DeFusco got a handshake and a hug from Obama at the ceremony. Her father died in a plane crash Aug. 31 in Colorado.

DeFusco graduated three months early from Farmington High School in March of 2012, and left for Marine boot camp two days later.

According to the Independent, DeFusco and a fellow Farmington High School student started a military club in an effort to raise awareness of the sacrifices made by military men and women.
