Fatal crash in southern MN closes highway for 'several hours'

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating a fatal head-on crash in Olmsted County.

The crash, which involved three vehicles and at least three people, happened just before 10 a.m. Thursday on Highway 52 near County Road 129, north of Chatfield, according to the State Patrol's report.

Officials have not released any other details.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation tweeted at 11:20 a.m. saying the road is expected to be closed for "several hours" as the state patrol investigates.

Witnesses told KTTC that a red Honda Civic, which had been swerving on the road prior to the crash, was traveling northbound on Highway 52 when it crossed the line and struck a white SUV. The car behind the SUV was also involved in the crash – it hit a tree and ended up in a ditch, witnesses say.

KIMT reports the driver of the Honda was killed, while three others in the SUV were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Many roads in southern Minnesota were partially or completely covered in snow Thursday morning, which contributed to a handful of spinouts and other incidents. But road conditions at the time of the crash near Chatfield were listed as "wet," the State Patrol's report says.

Dozens of other crashes were reported Thursday.
