Father, 4-year-old son die in kayaking accident on Hart Lake in northern Minnesota

A father and son have died after their kayak overturned on Hart Lake in northern Minnesota on Saturday. 

According to the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office, 42-year-old Jesse Anderson of Northwood, Iowa and his 4-year-old son were kayaking on Hart Lake, near Bemidji when their kayak overturned, sending both into the water. 

Witnesses called 911 after neither resurfaced and a search for the duo began just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday. 

The 4 year old, identified as Micah by family members on Facebook, was found shortly after the search began.

Rescue workers performed CPR and had him airlifted to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital where he was listed in critical condition, but later died from his injuries. 

A lengthy search for Anderson came up empty and was suspended overnight. His body was found just before 11 a.m. Sunday in about six feet of water. 

Tributes are being paid online to the pair, with daughter and sister Kari Anderson writing on Facebook: "We are sad, but we will always remember. We can never forget the death, but more important, we will always remember the life and love we shared."

Donations are being taken for the family at the NSB, 900 Central Ave in Northwood, and FSB at 99 7th St. N, Northwood, both in Iowa.

Note: This story earlier stated that neither victim was wearing a lifejacket. This information came from the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office, but the Anderson family has informed us that Micah Anderson was wearing one.
