A 31-year-old father from Frazee drowned on Saturday after jumping into a lake to save his 3-year-old son, who had fallen from a bridge.

The tragedy unfolded in Dead Shot Bay, part of Detroit Lake, at 8:22 p.m. Saturday, when Christopher Schultz jumped into the water to save his child who had fallen in from Long Bridge.

The father then began to struggle while holding his son above the water.

While witnesses went into the water to bring the boy to the shore, Schultz never resurfaced.

A search from emergency services immediately started, and at 9:07 p.m. Schultz was found and taken to St. Mary's Essentia Hospital.

Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead, the Becker County Sheriff's Office said.

The man's son suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
