Father given 30 month sentence for rubbing hot sauce in 2-month-old daughter's eyes

The 32-year-old was convicted of 3rd degree assault.
Publish date:

A father from Moorhead, Minnesota has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years for a cruel assault on this 2-month-old daughter.

Shawn Foltz, 32, was charged with 3rd degree assault for injuries he inflicted on his baby, which included rubbing hot sauce and cayenne pepper in her mouth, nose and eyes.

He also snapped a towel at her eyes and head, and at one point blocked her airway until she turned blue, according to court records.

The baby's mother was sent a picture by Foltz on May 31, 2017, while he was looking after their child, showing her with red, swollen eyes and foaming at the mouth, Valley News Live reports.

He later told police he was trying to feed her but she was moving around and fussing, and during the course of the frustration he snapped the towel at her face. He initially pinned the blame on their 4-year-old son, fearing his wife would leave him for what he'd done.

His now ex-wife spoke before the court on Wednesday, WDAY reports, saying that her daughter has recovered from the abuse and is now "healthy and active."

She said her son has been emotionally scarred by witnessing the attack, and said the sentence given to her ex was too short.
