A Twin Cities man was indicted in connection with a fatal heroin overdose last fall – a first for the state's U.S. Attorney's Office.

Jamie Edward McClellan, 31, of Brooklyn Park, was indicted Tuesday on charges of conspiring to distribute heroin, and selling heroin that resulted in someone's death, U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger announced Wednesday.

“Heroin continues to threaten people’s lives,” Luger said in the release. “This indictment marks the first time my office has charged a defendant with distributing heroin resulting in death. As our state continues to grapple with the dangers of heroin and other harmful drugs, law enforcement will remain vigilant in tracking down and prosecuting dealers.”

McClellan was arrested on Dec. 16, 2015, after investigators say between January 2014 and December 2015 he conspired with others in Minnesota to distribute more than 2 pounds of heroin. He also attempted to sell heroin to undercover officers on at least four separate occasions, according to attorney's office news release.

When he was arrested, the release says McClellan had 15 grams of heroin, $400,000 in cash, and a 10mm semi-automatic pistol. He was prohibited from carrying a gun because he had been convicted of a felony.

According to the news release, court documents say McClellan sold heroin to one victim – a Medina man – on Oct. 23, 2015, warning him to be careful when using the drug because it was the "good stuff."

McClellan had been previously charged in Anoka and Hennepin counties for similar crimes, with officials calling him a "major heroin distributor."

He'd been linked to the death of 24-year-old Alex Milun, who was found dead in his Medina home on Oct. 24, 2015, of a fatal overdose.
