Feds arrest 10 at Sparboe Farms in Litchfield

Officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 10 people at a Sparboe Farms facility in Litchfield Tuesday, the Star Tribune reports.

An ICE spokesperson says the arrests were made on "administrative charges," a legal tool often used in cases involving immigration, according to the newspaper.

Two people have been released, while eight remain in custody. The federal agency released very little information about the investigation.

Sparboe is the fifth-largest shell egg producer and marketer in the United States, the Associated Press reports. The company says it serves retail, wholesale and foodservice customers in 26 states.

In a company statement, Sparboe says they follow federal immigration laws and conduct documentation verification of all employees. The company added there is no risk to food safety.

Sparboe made headines in 2011 after several companies including McDonald's and Traget dropped the egg supplier after an animal rights group released disturbing undercover video of operations at three Sparboe Farms.
