A woman who is a suspect in a home invasion near the Minnesota State Fairgrounds underwent surgery after she was shot as fled the scene.

The incident unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday in the 2000 block of Como Avenue, where preliminary information from St. Paul Police Department says "several suspects" entered an apartment, one of them with a gun.

"The person with the gun pointed it at several people while the other suspects stole things from the dwelling," a police spokesman said.

As the suspects went to their vehicle with the stolen goods, "shots were fired by someone and one of the suspects was struck." The suspect, a woman, was struck in the chest and back.

She was driven by the suspects to Regions Hospital, where she underwent surgery and is expected to survive.

It's not clear at this stage who fired the gun. The whole incident is under investigation.
