At least nine people are dead and several more are missing after a fire started at a warehouse party in California late Friday night.

The warehouse in Oakland had been hosting a concert by electronic group Golden Donna when the fire started around 11:30 p.m., BBC reports. The building is home to several artists' studios, and is not a formal concert venue, BBC noted.

Oakland firefighters posted footage of the fire to Twitter:

Firefighters were still at the scene Saturday morning as flames shot through the roof of the building.

CNN says up to 100 people were trapped inside when the fire started, and 25 people are still unaccounted for, according to a statement from Oakland Fire Chief Teresa Deloach Reed.

People have been posting on the event's Facebook page in the search for survivors. There's also a Google Doc that lists missing persons and their descriptions.

The fire chief said it is unclear what started the fire, and that the building did not have sprinklers or a clear exit for people to get out.

"One of the issues was that leading up to the second floor there was only one way up and down," Reed told reporters. "It was my understanding that the stairwell was kind of makeshift, that they put it together with pallets."

Reed also said that the fatality count may go up as the rubble is searched.

"As we continue to search the building, I pray that fatality count does not go up, but I believe there is a potential for it to," she said.

The location was supposed to be a secret and was announced the day of the show, according to the Facebook event.

Non-profit Gray Area Foundation for the Arts, Inc. has launched a Fire Relief Fund for the victims.
