Fire crews from Eagan and Burnsville extinguished a blaze at the city of Eagan's historic Town Hall building.

KMSP reported that the fire began around 5 a.m. and that most of the building was able to be saved. The flames are believed to have broken out in the back of the building and then worked their way up to the attic. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but WCCO reported that authorities are calling it suspicious.

The Pioneer Press reported the fire crews had the blaze under control after about 15 minutes and worked another hour dousing all the embers. Firefighters on scene then worked to remove artifacts from the building. While many original items of hisotirc significance were stored at the current city hall, some items, such as the century-old glass windows were destroyed.

"It's hard to put a number on its contents," city spokesman Tom Garrison told the newspaper.

Eagan's original civic building, constructed in 1893, burned down. The Town Hall that caught fire Sunday was constructed in 1914. It was the community's meeting hall until 1965. When a municipal center was built on Pilot Knob Road in 1983, the historic building was restored to serve as a museum, showcasing memorabilia from Eagan's past.
