One person has died and two are critical after a trailer home was engulfed in flames on Thursday evening.

Responders were called to the house on Carlton Road in Evergreen Township, in western Wisconsin's Washburn County at 6:46 p.m. to find the house covered in smoke.

A dispatcher had received a call from a female who then went silent, however they could still hear breathing on the line.

Officers couldn't get in the front door and could see the glow of fire through the windows.

A deputy kicked the back door in and could see two people – a man and a woman – inside. The door was blocked but officers eventually got it off its hinges and were able to get the pair out of the house.

Both were still breathing but unconscious. A deputy tried to ask the woman if anyone else was still inside but didn't get an answer. They remain in the hospital in critical but stable condition.

A neighbor told police that as far as they knew, three people stayed in the trailer – the third being a younger man. By this point the property was fully engulfed in flames.

As the fire was knocked down, firefighters discovered a man's body on the west side of the trailer.

The identities of the deceased and the two injured parties have not been released.

The fire remains under investigation.
