Firefighters douse blaze at Verso Paper Mill

Firefighters from four departments were called to help put out a blaze Thursday at an office building at the Verso Paper Mill, which was largely gutted by a much larger fire on Memorial Day 2012, the St. Cloud Times reports. No one was injured.

A passerby reported smoke coming from the building at about 6:40 a.m., the newspaper reports. The office building has been among those sitting vacant since the Memorial Day 2012 blaze that gutted much of the mill in Sartell, roughly 70 miles northwest of the Twin Cities.

The mill has been closed since then. Company officials had said it would be too costly to rebuild the mill, which had about 260 workers.

One worker was killed in the fire and several were injured. Verso collected about $84 million in insurance after the fire, and the company paid about $16.3 million in severance and benefits to some workers.

AIM Development, a Montreal-based scrap metal and recycling company, bought the mill and property for $12.5 million, it was reported in March.

Demolition began earlier this month. AIM planned to bring down more than 530,000-square-feet of buildings, along with tanks and other structures.
