Fleeing suspect killed after causing 6-car pileup in Chaska

A fleeing suspect was killed in the Twin Cities on Tuesday evening after causing a pileup involving 6 vehicles.

Police began pursuing the suspect after receiving a report of a driver swerving on U.S. 212 in Carver County around 5:32 p.m., catching up with him on eastbound 212 at County Road 53 in Cologne, Minnesota.

The motorist, driving a 2008 BMW, accelerated when police approached, with the chase ending up on northbound Minnesota 41 in Chaska, where the suspect crashed into several other cars.

There were 6 vehicles involved in the crash including that of the suspect, who was severely injured and died as a result of his injuries.

The Minnesota State Patrol has identified him as James Charles Erickson, 40, of St. Paul. He was not wearing a seat belt. 

Several more people were taken to local hospitals for treatment for their injuries.

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the incident.
