A Minnesota sheriff says a fleeing suspect showed "absolute disregard for human life" when he reversed a car into one of his deputies.

Crow Wing County Sheriff's Deputy Tony Brunhuber needed hospital treatment after he was struck by the car as he tried to take a probation violation suspect into custody in Baxter, Minnesota, Wednesday afternoon.

The 33-year-old suspect, a local man, was in his vehicle in the parking lot of the Crow Wing County Judicial Center when he abruptly reversed.

He struck Brunhuber before fleeing in his car.

Brunhuber was taken to Essentia Hospital in Brainerd but fortunately his injuries weren't too serious, and he was released later.

The suspect, meanwhile, was found three hours later, hiding in the garage of a 27-year-old acquaintance who was arrested for aiding an offender.

Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl was furious with the incident, saying in a press release: “This was an absolute disregard for human life, no question about it."

"I personally was involved in the response, as well as the search, and this could have easily resulted in the death of one of our deputies," he said. "We look forward to a speedy recovery and Deputy Brunhuber returning to work in the very near future."

As for the suspect, Dahl said: "My hope is that he is prosecuted and sits for a very long period of time.”

Assaults on cops have been rising

The past few years have seen an increase in assaults against police officers, albeit it's still significantly lower than the number seen in the 1980s.

There were 166 assaults on Minnesota police officers that resulted in injury in 2015, according to the Star Tribune, which was slightly lower than the number seeing in 2013 and 2014 but more than every year from 1993 to 2012.

The rate of assault in 2015 was 4 for every 100 officers. In 2014 it was 5 for every 100 officers, the highest it's been since 1988, the newspaper notes.
