An old convertible car crashed into Lake Minnetonka on Thursday night having earlier been pursued by police.

South Lake Minnetonka Police Department says it started following the car just before 9:30 p.m., when a call reported the suspicious vehicle in Tonka Bay, which was speeding away after the sound of breaking glass was heard.

When police found the car, the driver fled despite attempts to pull it over. Police chased the car into Excelsior, losing sight and giving up around 9:35 p.m. as the convertible reached speeds well in excess of the speed limit.

A short time later the vehicle was found partially-submerged in Lake Minnetonka near the Port of Excelsior.

The passenger was found in a "local establishment," and told police they last saw the driver in the water as the vehicle sank.

It sparked a major search from several local authorities, which was eventually called off when police received "credible" information that the driver had actually exited the water safely and was not in danger.

The driver has not been found yet, with the police department continuing to investigate.
