The Cannon River is dropping following floods triggered by torrential rains overnight, KARE 11 reports.

It all began when the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for a section of southeast Minnesota after Thursday's deluge of 6 inches in some areas. The flood warning was in effect until Friday afternoon for Dakota, Rice and Goodhue counties.

Officials say streams flowing into the Cannon River were over their banks, and homes were evacuated earlier in the day in Cannon Falls, WCCO reports.

By the afternoon, Cannon Falls Police Chief Jeff McCormick told the Star Tribune that the evacuation recommendation has been rescinded for now and he is "cautiously optimistic that the worst is over."

In the Twin Cities, 0.86 inches of rain was officially recorded at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport as of 7 p.m. Thursday, the Pioneer Press reports.

In Goodhue County, large trees were down, barn and shed roofs blown off and a semitrailer tractor was blown off the road on Highway 52 near Pine Island, National Weather Service forecaster Jacob Beitlich told the Star Tribune.

Northfield is littered with debris from the storms, but all Northfield roads are clear Friday morning, the Northfield News reports. Northfield got 5.88 inches of rain Thursday and the Cannon River rose 3 feet, the News says.

WCCO-TV’s Aristea Brady covered the storms in Northfield, and during her reporting emergency crews told her she could not travel on Highway 19 because it was too dangerous.

More rain is expected through the weekend and continues much of next week, KARE 11 says. Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected Friday throughout much of Minnesota, although thunderstorms could redevelop through the southeastern quarter of the state Friday afternoon, KARE 11 says:

Floodwaters are receding in most areas of northeast Minnesota, but it will be several more days before the area is safe to travel. Residents in the Fon du Lac neighborhood were among those allowed to return Saturday.
