Florida Republican's campaign letter says Ilhan Omar should be 'hanged'

The candidate has denied the letter, saying his campaign manager wrote it.

Minnesota 5th District Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is again in the national spotlight after a campaign fundraising letter suggested she be hanged.

"We should hang these traitors where they stand," says a fundraising letter sent Nov. 26 by the campaign of a Republican George Buck, who is running for Congress in St. Petersburg, Florida. The letter, according to reports, accuses Omar of secretly working for the Country of Qatar.

In a statement provided to the Tampa Bay Times, Buck denied knowledge of the threat and blamed it on his campaign manager whom he declined to identify.

“That was not me. I did not see that," Buck, whose signature is on the letter, told the newspaper. "I would never talk like that.”

The report adds that Buck later appeared to defend the letter in a separate statement provided to the Times:

"The statement included the constitutional definition of treason and the federal punishment: "death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000.”

Buck then sent a statement to the Tampa Bay Times providing the definition of the federal punishment for treason, which is the death penalty or at least five years in prison. Buck said he stands behind

The letter also names U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), who along with Omar are the first Muslim women in Congress.

"The fact that those who make these violent threats very publicly without hesitation reaffirms just how much white supremacy has spread within the NRCC (National Republican Congressional Committee)," Tlaib wrote in a tweet. "They are raising money on a call to hang a Black Muslim member of Congress and too many are silent."

The tweet was retweeted by Omar.

The threatening letter comes on the heels of Twitter suspending the account of Omar's GOP challenger in Minnesota's 5th district, Danielle Stella, who recently said on Twitter that the Omar "should be tried for treason and hanged" if it's proven she "passed sensitive info to Iran."
