The Ford Motor Co.'s assembly plant in Highland Park has been cleared for demolition by the St. Paul Planning Commission, the Pioneer Press reports.

Plans for the teardown of the plant -- which will begin next spring -- were given the go-ahead Friday after conditions for the project were cleared by the commission.

The 122 acre site was home to the assembly plant for more than 86 years. The plant closed in December 2011 after Ford ceased production of its Ranger vehicle.

The demolition project is estimated to take three years, and cleanup and restoration may stretch the project into 2018.

A public task force is advising the city on the redevelopment of the site.
