Forecasters: Minnesota to fall back into the deep freeze

Minnesota could see some of its coldest temperatures in years on Sunday and Monday, for the final few days of 2013.

Forecast lows on those days are expected to be between minus 15, and 17 below zero.

If that holds true it would be one of the coldest days on record in the metro area over the last five years, according to WCCO Meteorologist Matt Brickman. He says there have only been six days in the last five years that have reached minus 15 in the Twin Cities.

Brickman says it hasn't happened in the last three years.

Snow and strong winds are expected to move into the state on Saturday evening, which could cause a few headaches in greater Minnesota.

The National Weather Service predicts near blizzard conditions for a large portion of west-central and south-central Minnesota Saturday evening and Saturday night. The weather service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Saturday night into Sunday for the region.

Wind gusts up to 40 miles an hour will create blowing snow and reduce visibility in open areas making travel difficult, according to the weather service.

The main threat on Sunday will be the cold. As a result a Wind Chill Advisory has been issued for southwest Minnesota.

The temperature is expected to drop throughout the day on Sunday. FOX 9 meteorologist Cody Matz says it will be very cold on Sunday during the Vikings' last regular season game and will likely stay that way through the remainder of the year.
