Allen Jacobson, a former CEO of the 3M Co. from 1986 to 1991 has died at 86. Jacobson, who championed research and development at 3M, started with the Maplewood-based manufacturing company after graduating from college in 1947.

3M CEO backs off growth projections

3M's Chief Executive Officer is revising the projections for annual sales growth set by his predecesor. Bloomberg reports 3M's new goal is to increase revenue four to six percent a year at existing businesses, a reduction from the seven to eight percent sought by the previous CEO.

3M to invest $50 million in China

A 3M executive says the $50 million investment is part of a "five-year strategy for China to increase annual sales 15 to 20 percent." The Maplewood-based manufacturer plans to develop new technology and products for the China market -- 3M's biggest overseas market.

New CEO wants to turn 3M into $50 billion company

Inge Thulin formally took the reins at 3M during the company's annual shareholders meeting. Thulin is a 33-year employee of 3M, beginning in his native Sweden. He says he wants to boost revenue from last year's $29 billion to the $50 billion threshold.

3M expands solar-film plant

3M is expanding its sustainable energy footprint with its new photovoltaic film manufacturing plant in Missouri. The Maplewood-based conglomerate says the film cuts manufacturing time and replaces the need for the heavy glass used in rooftop solar modules. The Star Tribune also reports the project will lower costs for U.S.-based makers of solar panels.
