The Duluth-Superior, Wis., business community is mourning the loss of a former costume dealer and collector who died Thursday after falling eight feet down an elevator shaft, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

Doug Moen, 65, fell down the shaft while working in a Superior warehouse, and died at a Superior hospital Thursday night.

According to the Tribune, Moen opened his first business -- the Second Act Costume Shop -- in Duluth in 1977.

He closed his last costume business -- a 6,000-square-foot shop in Superior -- in 2005. He told the Tribune at the time that he had another 45,000 square feet worth of vintage items, which were boxed up in warehouses and basements in Duluth and Superior.

In addition to high school plays and community theater productions, Moen's costumes were worn in several Minnesota-made films, including "Far North," "Iron Will," "North Country" and "A Prairie Home Companion," the Tribune says.
