Developer interested in repurposing former Fergus Falls mental hospital

A developer is interested in dropping $41 million dollars into a century old architectural landmark in west central Minnesota, to transform it into a multi-use complex featuring a 120-room luxury hotel, 60 apartments, restaurants and a coffee shop.

The former Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center was closed by the state in 2009, as care for the mentally ill shifted from institutional care. City officials have sought developers to repurpose the former asylum, but with no prospects, the building was in danger of being demolished.

The Star Tribune reports that the Fergus Falls City Council voted last week to enter into a letter of intent with a Georgia-based developer that specializes in renovating historic structures. The developer group will work with city officials on a comprehensive agreement. Renovations could be completed by late 2015.

The Metropolitan Airports Commission issued a query in June to any developers who might be interested in constructing a small hotel – perhaps 70 or 80 rooms – in an existing parking lot across from the entry to the airport’s main Lindbergh Terminal, Finance and Commerce reports. Three responded, although the small size and sound-proofing issues would make the project difficult, developers say.

A Fergus Falls man was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday for a felony DWI conviction. Richard Papenfuss, 62, has over 20 DWI arrests on his record and has already served prison time for a previous DWI. In the Twin Cities, a Plymouth woman was arrested Thursday morning for probable cause DWI. She had already served prison time for hitting a killing a man in 2010.

A state official tells lawmakers that metal handcuffs and seclusion are being phased out at the state hospital. The hospital was fined last year for maltreatment of patients.
