Former President Barack Obama praises Governor Tim Walz as VP pick
Former President Barack Obama praised Minnesota Governor Tim Walz during Tuesday night's Democratic National Convention, describing him as "the kind of person who should be in politics."
Day two of the Democratic National Convention ended with Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama addressing the crowd in Chicago, with the former president praising Kamala Harris' choice in running mate.
Earlier in his speech, Obama had said one of the best decisions he made as president was choosing now-President Joe Biden as his running mate.
"Let me tell you something, I love this guy," Obama said of Walz. "Tim’s the kind of person who should be in politics – somebody who was born in a small town, served his country, taught kids, coached football, took care of his neighbors."
"He knows who he is and what’s important," he continued. "You can tell those flannel shirts he wears don’t come from some political consultant, they come from his closet – and they have been through some stuff!"
This last comment drew a knowing clap from Walz's wife, Gwen, who could be seen mouthing "so true."
Both Obamas endorsed the Harris-Walz ticket, with Barack Obama saying: "Together, Kamala and Tim have kept faith with America’s central story – a story that says we’re all created equal."
"That’s Kamala’s vision. That’s Tim’s vision. That’s the Democratic Party’s vision," he added. "Our job over the next eleven weeks is to convince as many people as possible to vote for that vision."
Neither Walz nor Harris were in attendance in Chicago on Tuesday. They were about 100 miles north in Milwaukee, hosting a campaign rally in front of a packed arena.
Walz is the headline speaker for Wednesday night at the DNC, with Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg among the other speakers. Harris will then close the convention on Thursday.
