Former conservative radio talk show host Jason Lewis is running for Congress in Minnesota's 2nd District, to replace retiring Republican U.S. Rep. John Kline.

Lewis, a Republican, made his announcement in a video posted Monday.

"I've been talking about public policy for decades, and now I'm ready to make it," he said in the video.

Lewis was known as "Mr. Right" while hosting talk shows on Twin Cities radio stations for some 20 years. He left KTLK last year to focus on his libertarian website, Galt.io, according to the Star Tribune.

Lewis said his campaign will be a battle over big government and returning more power to the states.

"Government has grown far beyond its constitutional limits and the result is less freedom, less real economic growth, higher taxes, more debt, and a national angst about where we’re headed as a people," Lewis said on his campaign website.

Lewis brings a higher level of name recognition than any of the other announced candidates for the 2nd District. He is the fourth Republican to enter the race.

The others are former State Rep. Pam Myhra of Burnsville, former state Sen. and former Red Wing Mayor John Howe, and tea party activist David Gerson.

Two Democrats are also running: Mary Lawrence, a Minneapolis doctor, and Angie Craig, a St. Jude’s Medical executive.

Wide-open race

John Kline handily won re-election over the past seven terms, but the 2nd District went for President Barack Obama in 2012.

The southern Minnesota district had been reliably Republican but is now considered more of a swing district, and Democrats believe they have a strong shot at winning the seat.
