A former University of Minnesota student has been charged with raping two women he met at college parties in the fall of 2014.

Daniel Drill-Mellum, 22, of Waconia, faces five felony counts of criminal sexual conduct in connection with the incidents, according to a news release from Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

“This violent behavior injured and humiliated these young women and it offends our sense of decency,” Freeman said. “Our office worked hard with police and these courageous women to make sure there was enough admissible evidence so that we could bring charges.”

The two sexual assaults occurred within eight days of each other in the autumn of 2014.

The first occurred Halloween night, when Drill-Mellum met the victim at a party at the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house. According to the criminal complaint, Drill-Mellum led the 18-year-old woman into a laundry room in the house and began kissing her.

He tried to reach under her shirt, but the young woman pushed his hand away. He then pushed her against the wall and held her hands down while he began undressing her.

The woman continued to resist and Drill-Mellum then pushed her to the floor and raped her, at one point saying, "I know you want this."

The victim told her roommate about the attack the next day, and went to the hospital, but did not report the assault to police until last month when she heard that Drill-Mellum had been banned from campus for a sexual assault that took place after hers.

That second assault took place on Nov. 8, 2014, when Drill-Mellum met a 19-year-old woman at a party in a residence on University Avenue SE. According to the criminal complaint, Drill-Mellum asked the woman to go with him to his apartment across the street to get more alcohol for the party.

Once there, they began kissing. He then tried to take off her clothes but she resisted. He later held her down on the bed, raped her and bit her several times, according to the criminal complaint.

The woman called police to report the assault and was taken to a hospital to be examined and treated for multiple lacerations and bleeding.

Drill-Mellum has been working in Australia and was arrested Christmas Eve when his flight arrived at Minneapolis-St. Paul airport. According to the Star Tribune, Drill-Mellum flew home to take part in his sister's upcoming wedding.

Drill-Mellum was a student at the U from the fall of 2012 through the fall of 2014 in the Carlson School of Management, the Star Tribune reports. During his senior year at Chaska High School, Drill-Mellum was an intern in Gov. Mark Dayton's office, the newspaper reports.

Drill-Mellum was scheduled to appear in Hennepin District Court Monday afternoon. He remains in custody in the Hennepin County Jail on $100,000 bail.
