7:45 a.m. UPDATE
Original story 7 a.m.
Staying home might be a wise idea Saturday morning as roadways in southern Minnesota are littered with crashes and spinouts as a powerful winter storm has delivered a shot of rain and mixed precipitation, leading to very icy conditions.
In the Twin Cities metro area, there were over 100 crashes/spinouts before 7 a.m. The map below is filled with purple markers, each one indicating a reported crash. The map is from 6:40 a.m.
There weren't a lot of cars on the road prior to 7 a.m., but those that were out and about were moving slowly as MnDOT is reporting roadways completed covered in ice.
More rain is expected throughout the day Saturday and into Sunday, with heavy snow and freezing rain expected in other parts of the state through the weekend. Get the latest details on the winter storm right here.
