UPDATE 9:15 a.m.

Freezing rain is causing poor travel conditions across southern and southeastern Minnesota.

Original story

Sloppy snow and mixed precipitation will fall in the Twin Cities today through Tuesday, with the majority of the metro area ending up with 2-3 inches of snow.

Just northwest of the immediate metro, places like Elk River, St. Michael and Albertville are forecast to receive 3-4 inches. Northwest from there, on a line from about St. Cloud to Fargo, people can expect 4-6 inches.

Further to the southeast is where warmer temps will lead the way to freezing rain, with as much as a 1/4 to a 1/3 inch of ice accumulation in Albert Lea, Rochester and far southeastern Minnesota.

1/10 of an inch of ice could accumulate before the freezing rain changes over to snow in the northwest side of the metro, and up to a 1/4 of an inch in the southeast half of the Twin Cities.

Freezing rain is already proving to be a problem in parts of Minnesota early Monday morning.

The National Weather Service-Twin Cities predicts that the first wave of precipitation will occur Monday morning and afternoon and then taper off before a second wave carrying the bulk of the snow for western and central Minnesota arrives overnight Monday into Tuesday.
