A freight train derailed in Plymouth Sunday afternoon, with police saying around a dozen cars went off the tracks.

The derailment happened at Northwest Boulevard near Schmidt Lake Road just before 1 p.m., per Plymouth police.

The incident saw a number of tanker cars crashed off the tracks, several of them flipping over.

At this stage it's not clear whether there has been any spill from the tankers, nor what the tankers were carrying, but Plymouth PD said there is "no threat to public safety" at this time.

Close-up pictures of the crash were shared to the Minnesota Railroads Facebook group by Shawn Christie.
