The president of Totino-Grace High School in Fridley voluntarily stepped down last week after informing the Catholic school that he's in a committed same-sex relationship.

Dr. William Hudson's resignation is effective June 28, according to a letter from Mark Motzel and Mary Wilcox, co-presidents of the Totino-Grace High School Corporate Board.

WCCO reports Hudson was hired by the school as vice president for Mission in 2004 and became president in 2011.

"He has an excellent record of accomplishment and provided strong academic and financial stewardship at Totino-Grace during his tenure," the letter states. "That said, leading a Catholic school while living in a committed same-sex relationship is not consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church."

Earlier in his career, Hudson held various positions at Hill-Murray School, also Catholic, and Trinity Catholic Elementary School in St. Paul, KSTP reported. He also had a top role at the National Catholic Education Association, according to the Associated Press.

In a statement Tuesday, Hudson said, "I love the Totino-Grace community, however I need to be truthful about my life."

Principal Julie Michels will take on the role of Interim President for the 2013-2014 school year while the board finds a replacement.
