Friends, family, students remember Castile as kind and hard-working

Following Thursday's funeral service for Philando Castile – which thousands attended – people crowded around J.J. Hill Montessori School in St. Paul for a public reception.

It was a large but quiet gathering, with people spending the majority of the two-hour event reflecting on Castile's life and sharing memories.

A woman who worked with Castile in the school's cafeteria described him as "outgoing" and a "peacekeeping," always willing to help students.

A man noted Castile had given up his summer to work and spend time with the kids at school.

Students spoke very highly of him as well.

Tiasha Givens tells BringMeTheNews she saw him in lunch for two years, saying he was a nice person who remembered her birthday and was there for her when she was feeling down.

One of Castile's cousins added that "everybody knew him, everybody loved him."

Not everyone who attended was a close, personal friend or relative. Many were just there to support their community.

An anonymous donor provided hot dogs and hamburgers for 1,500 to 2,000 people, the Star Tribune reported.
