From Itasca to the Gulf: Navy vet's swim honored military families

Chris Ring arrived at ground zero Friday. Except there's not really any ground at Mile Marker 0 on the Mississippi River.

The 28-year-old Navy veteran completed a swim that started in northern Minnesota in June and ended 2,350 miles away, where the Mississippi River flows into the Gulf of Mexico.

Ring planned his journey through the group Legacies Alive, which honors families that have lost loved ones in military service. His trip down the Mississippi included meetings with many such families, known as Gold Star families.

Ring began his swim on June 6 – the anniversary of the D-Day invasion – and had hoped to finish it on Veterans Day but a shoulder injury slowed him down, the Bemidji Pioneer reports.

The Navy SEAL spent about seven hours per day in the river, covering an average of 14 miles, the Pioneer says.

Ring, who's been swimming six days a week for about six months, will have some time to rest before he's recognized at the Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia on Dec. 12, Fox News reports.
