The University of Minnesota Duluth sophomore who had to have part of her fingers and feet amputated after spending a night in the sub-zero temperatures has improved enough to be released from Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Alyssa Jo Lommel will continue her rehabilitation at the hospital in her hometown of St. Cloud.

The St Cloud Times reports that Lommel, 19, is expected to be transferred on Monday. The newspaper quoted Lommel’s mother Teri, who wrote on the CaringBridge site that she had pushed for her daughter, a Cathedral High School graduate, to relocate to a spot closer to the family’s home in St. Cloud. “We will really miss all the wonderful people here (at Regions), but to be so close to home will be fantastic,” Teri Lommel wrote.

KAAL-TV has broadcast pictures of Lommel from the CaringBridge site.

Lommel was in critical condition at the time of the incident, but has steadily improved since. She has been at Regions since mid-December. She was transferred from a hospiial in Duluth after she was found on a neighbor’s front porch, unconscious and severely hypothermic.

Last week, WDIO in Duluth reported on an effort by some of Lomme's former co-workers to support her recovery. The UMD student worked in the latchkey program at St. John's School in Duluth. Some of her fellow teachers have begun to sell bracelets and key chains to help with medical costs.

"These kids she's worked with for the past couple years means a lot in supporting her in her recovery process and we'd like to help the family monetarily as well," teacher Leah Kilsdonk said.
