Frostbitten UMD student undergoes second round of amputations

The University of Minnesota-Duluth student who suffered severe frostbite after spending the night on a Duluth porch last month underwent a second amputation surgery Tuesday, WDIO reports.

Alyssa Jo Lommel's mother, Teri, wrote on the 19-year-old's CaringBridge page Tuesday that doctors had to amputate all of her daughter's fingers and both thumbs after finding more tissue damage than expected.

She wrote that the amputations of the fingers were below the knuckles on both hands.

Teri Lommel expects Wednesday will be a rough day because her daughter hasn't been told of the amputations yet, according to the CaringBridge page.

KSTP says Alyssa Jo Lommel is expected to be hospitalized through mid-February.

Lommel nearly froze to death in December after spending nine hours outdoors following a night of drinking, enduring sub-zero temperatures.

Earlier this month, doctors at Regions Hospital in St. Paul amputated the tips of Lommel’s toes on one foot and all of her toes on her other foot.

Lommel's mother also wrote updates about her daughter's status from her previous surgery, saying, "Her heels looked better than they had expected, and she should be able to put pressure on both heels once they had healed," add "she should be able to walk normally."

Doctors were concerned about Lommel's heels, which they thought could have been more damaged than originally presumed.
