Funeral for Philando Castile will be Thursday at Cathedral of St. Paul

A memorial service for Philando Castile will be held Thursday at the Cathedral of St. Paul, the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis said Tuesday.

Castile was fatally shot by a St. Anthony police officer during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights on July 6. His death, which Gov. Mark Dayton has suggested was racially motivated, spurred demonstrations outside the Governor's Residence and protests that closed down Interstate 94.

Castile is not Catholic, the archdiocese says, but the request to hold the funeral at the Cathedral of St. Paul came from Castile's mother Valerie Castile, who wants the service to be for "people to come together in a new way" to pray for peace and reconciliation.

Tom Halden, a spokesperson for the archdiocese, told BringMeTheNews it's not out of the ordinary for a non-Catholic person to have a funeral at a Catholic church, noting the service will follow the structure of a funeral liturgy, outside of the Mass, and will involve both Catholics and non-Catholics.

Cathedral Rector Rev. John Ubel will lead the liturgical prayers, while Rev. Steve Daniels, Sr. (a pastor at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church) will deliver the eulogy, the archdiocese notes.

The funeral will focus on the preservation of peace, justice and reconciliation among all people. The service will be held at noon.

In the days after Castile's death, Archbishop Bernard Hebda said: "In the midst of anger, fear and frustration, we need to come together as God's family to pray that god's grace might unite all people of good will and bring light into the darkness of this difficult time."

The Cathedral of St. Paul held a Mass of Justice and Peace last Thursday.

Castile family will file a lawsuit

The criminal investigation into Philando Castile's death is ongoing, and the Castile's family attorney Judge Glenda Hatchett said at a news conference Tuesday they will file a lawsuit.
