Funeral set for 1 of 2 children in metro highway pond crash

One of two children who died in a tragic pond accident in St. Louis Park last month will be laid to rest on Saturday, KARE 11 reported.

Family members said the funeral for Zenavia Rennie, 5, will be held at noon Saturday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Minneapolis, with a viewing set for 10 a.m.

Funeral plans for the other victim, 7-year-old Alarious Coleman-Guerrido, are expected to be announced Monday.

Rennie and Coleman-Guerrido died when a car driven by Marion Guerrido, 23, went off the roadway and dropped down an embankment and into a 9-foot-deep pond at the intersection of state Highways 7 and 100 on Nov. 21.

Five children were in the vehicle and were reportedly submerged in the pond for up to 45 minutes.

As of last week, two of the three surviving children were showing signs of improvement and recognized voices of relatives, the Star Tribune reported.

The Pioneer Press said the accident has spurred a debate as to why retention ponds have to be placed next to busy highways.

The paper said the purpose of the ponds is to capture runoff from the pavement. The federal Clean Water Act reportedly requires ponds for collection of contaminants since the water contains chemicals that aren't wanted in sewer systems.
