Funeral services will be held Wednesday for a St. Paul firefighter who collapsed and died last week at his fire station.

Shane Clifton, 38, died of an apparent heart attack on Aug. 31 at Station 14 on Snelling Avenue in St. Paul. He had been exercising at about 5 p.m. that when he complained he didn't feel well.

Clifton collapsed shortly afterward and his fellow firefighters and paramedics tried to revive him. He was taken to Regions Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Clifton's funeral will be held Wednesday from 10 a.m.- noon at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church, 1669 Arcade St. in St. Paul. Dignitaries including Gov. Mark Dayton, Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman will be in attendance.

As many as 1,000 firefighters from St. Paul and from departments around the country are expected to attend as well.

After the service, mourners will take part in a procession from the church to Fort Snelling National Cemetery, where his burial is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Clifton, who was also a Navy veteran, will be buried with full military and fire service honors, according to the Fire Department.

The Fire Department is alerting St. Paul residents there will be some traffic disruptions, especially as the processional takes place.

The various elements of a fire service funeral are steeped in tradition, and the St. Paul Fire Department explains the history behind them.

Clifton joined the St. Paul Fire Department in October 2007. He worked as an emergency department technician at Unity Hospital in Fridley and at Allina emergency medical services prior to joining the fire department.
