FWIW: Texting hurts student writing habits, teachers say

Teachers think that texting has taught students some writing habits that are not GR8.

A recent Pew Internet survey found that teachers say social media have given students new outlets for writing – which is a good thing – but also have fostered bad writing habits that creep into formal writing assignments.

MPR talked to Minnesota teachers who agree. "I think they have sloppy habits of mind, and I think that the Internet feeds into that," said Mara Corey, who teaches Advanced Placement writing courses in New Brighton, Minn. She told MPR that student writing habits have declined in her 13 years of teaching.

There's not much definitive research to support that texting has hurt the written language, Psychology Today reported last year. Linguists are divided, the publication reports.
