Gallery: Westbound I-94 reopens after 29-vehicle pileup
Westbound I-94 reopened Thursday evening after being closed most of the day due to a 29-vehicle pileup in squally conditions.
The Minnesota State Patrol says it's investigating how the crash near Monticello came to happen at around 9:15 a.m., w
In total, 29 vehicles were involved in the pileup, around half of which were semi-trailers.
In the wake of the crash, at least one of the trailers caught fire, with the blaze spreading to multiple other vehicles.
In total, nine people suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says that several drivers caught up in the drama left the scene before responders arrived, and the State Patrol now wants to hear from them as they piece together what happened.
"Poor visibility and challenging road conditions due to a snow squall made travel extremely difficult in the area at the time of the crash," the DPS said.
