Gander Mountain aims to open state's first guns 'super center'

Gander Mountain is planning to open Minnesota's first firearms “super center” at the end of April.

The store is scheduled to open in Rogers in a 30,000-square-foot former Best Buy, now being remodeled. The center will be aimed especially at gun enthusiasts, with thousands of new and used firearms, accessories, and ammunition options, WCCO reports.

Meanwhile, the outdoors-gear retailer is urging gun owners to take a responsibility pledge on its website as part of a broader gun-safety campaign.

The announcement of the store opening falls amid a passionate debate at both the state and federal level over new gun control proposals. Such proposals are driving an increase in firearm sales, as gun buyers fear future restrictions on sales. Some gun enthusiasts are hoarding bullets, and stores nationwide are having a hard time keeping ammunition shelves stocked, which has even put a pinch on some local law enforcement departments, the Associated Press reported.

The new center will put St. Paul-based Gander Mountain in direct competition with Nebraska-based Cabela’s, which has a large gun department in its Rogers superstore, the Star Tribune reports.

“Gander Mountain is already recognized as the firearms experts, but with our latest Gander Mountain Firearms Super Center, we are taking the experience of shopping for firearms and accessories to an entirely new level of selection and service,” CEO David Pratt said in a press release.

Patch reported that details about upcoming special events, activities and promotions will be available on the Gander Mountain website.

Gander Mountain is on the list of Minnesota’s 25 biggest private companies based on revenue, estimated to exceed $1 billion annually, Twin Cities Business magazine reported.

The new center will be Gander Mountain's 12th store in Minnesota.
