A potential disaster was averted in Bloomington when firefighters managed to contain flames that had broken out in the rear of a gas tanker Saturday morning.

The Bloomington Fire Department says the truck's "rear wheel brake/drum" caught fire near I-494 and France Ave:

Luckily, the flames did not reach the tank, and no gas leaked, the fire department says.

Officials are crediting the truck's driver with helping prevent a dire situation, saying he "did a nice job keeping the fire down with several extinguishers until" firefighters could arrive and take over.

They also say things "could have been much worse" without his quick thinking. It's not clear why the rear brake drum caught fire.

No injuries were reported.

The fires burning in the Boundary Water Canoe Area are mostly small, lightning-sparked blazes. A little rain Thursday didn't do much to help put them out. A small area of the BWCA wilderness and a hiking trail were closed. The biggest fire is the 50-acre Cummings Lake fire, which has not grown much in the last few days.
